Lee Enfield No.5 Mk1 Jungle Carbine is a shortened, lightened bolt-action military rifle developed from the British Lee-Enfield No.4 during World War II. This Pre-Owned rifle was designed to reduce overall weight and length for troops operating in confined terrain, particularly jungle environments. It retains the Lee-Enfield’s rear-locking bolt action and detachable box magazine while incorporating a shorter barrel, lightened receiver cuts, and a more compact stock configuration. Production ran from 1944 through 1947, making surviving examples closely associated with the final years of World War II and early postwar British service.
The No.5 Mk1 is distinguished from the standard No.4 by several purpose-built weight-reduction features. Material was removed from the receiver and barrel assembly, while the fore-end and handguard were shortened to produce a more compact rifle. A conical flash hider at the muzzle is one of the Jungle Carbine’s most recognizable external features and also serves as the mounting point for the front sight assembly. The buttstock incorporates a rubber recoil pad intended to make the lighter rifle more manageable under recoil. Its rear aperture sight retains the practical military sighting arrangement of the Lee-Enfield family while being adapted to the carbine configuration. The rifle’s short bolt throw, cock-on-closing action, and detachable magazine maintain the fast-handling characteristics for which Lee-Enfield rifles are known. Original No.5 Mk1 rifles are now widely collected for their distinctive configuration and limited production period.
